Initial Ideas & plot

How did we come up with the idea?

The Romantic comedy genre is one of the most popular and most appreciated. Across the demographic, fans of this genre tend to be women. Stereotypically romantic comedies include a lot of aspects that appeal to women of all ages. Me and the rest of the group are fans of this genre of film and decided that making something of this genre would really appeal to us and our target audience.

Originally we had a different idea of a Rom-com which would include elements of fantasy. It would be based in a world where a pink fog appears out of nowhere, and people suddenly begin to fall in love with the first person that they lay eyes on.

We later decided to change this idea as we realised that it would be difficult to get the effects we would need with such a low budget. We also came to the realisation that most rom-coms tend to be very cliché and found from our target audience research that the cliché involved is something that makes our target audience dislike them and may impede their adoption of the product.

We then found out that to reach our target audience meaningfully, we would need to have an original and unique plot and this is what led to us opting for a different approach to producing a romantic comedy.

The plot we decided on involves two women who live polar opposite lifestyles. On one hand there is Elizabeth, she is a high earning, upper class, business woman. On the other hand there is Ash who is unemployed, lower class, and quite incompetent. They end up colliding in the street as neither of them are looking where they are going as they go about their daily travels. Elizabeth becomes enraged and Ash is very apologetic but eventually can’t help but react to Elizabeth’s rude comments. Later that day Ash makes her way to a job interview. It is a shock for her to be reunited with Elizabeth. Elizabeth is horrified to see her but is slightly won over by her apologetic attitude. Ash is employed by Elizabeth and they end up finding themselves falling for each other. However they both want very different things and clash a lot of the time because of their different lifestyle choices. This will cause a lot of issues and arguments which adds a sarcastic, comedy aspect. The contrast in the two characters and their behaviour is another thing that will bring a lot of comedy to our production.

The reason we chose to use a same-sex couple is because is it original and unique so fits what our target audience want. From our research on this film genre we have found that it is rare to find a same sex couple in a romantic comedy and this is what gave us this unique idea.
